Kisumu: Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) has partnered with the Nairobi West Hospital to enhance the treatment of children suffering from sickle-cell anemia. The acting Chief Executive Officer of JOOTRH, Joshua Clinton, emphasized that early diagnosis and treatment are crucial in saving the lives of many children affected by the disease.
According to Kenya News Agency, the collaboration has resulted in the establishment of a Sh100 million hematology center at JOOTRH. This center brings hope not only to the affected children but also to their parents, providing much-needed support and care.
Dr. Parkash Sing Sagar, the Medical Superintendent of The Nairobi West Hospital, revealed that over 2.3 percent of children in the region are born with sickle cell anemia. Alarmingly, more than 90 percent of these children do not survive past their fifth birthday. He highlighted that The Nairobi West Hospital has adopted modern medical technologies, including chemotherapy and radiotherapy, which are essential in treating patients with sickle cell anemia.
Residents have been reassured about the affordability of treatment, as the Sosial Health Authority (SHA) is accepted for settling medical bills.
