Post: Kabarnet Court Halts Relocation of Moi Teachers College Students

Kabarnet: The High Court in Kabarnet has issued conservatory orders halting the relocation of students from Moi Teachers College-Baringo to Talai Secondary School. This decision was made to facilitate the establishment of Kabarnet University.

According to Kenya News Agency, Justice Reuben Nyakundi granted the interim orders following a petition by Godfrey Rotich, Kaplelach, Lavender Jelagat, and two others. Represented by their lawyer Edwin Rutto, the petitioners argued that the move was abrupt and unlawful, risking the displacement of over 1,000 students, teachers, and support staff.

The petitioners contended that the directive, given verbally by Cabinet Secretary for Education Julius Ogamba during the college's 29th graduation on July 31, 2025, lacked an official relocation plan. They claimed it would disrupt ongoing academic programmes and projects. Furthermore, they argued that the CS had overstepped his authority by invoking a June 13 Gazette Notice to establish Kabarnet University without proper transition orders.

Additionally, the petitioners pointed out that the proposed relocation site, a secondary school, does not offer the same services or educational infrastructure as a Teachers Training College. They emphasized the challenges students would face in continuing their field projects already underway at the current institution.

Justice Nyakundi ordered the application to be treated as urgent and scheduled an inter-parties hearing for August 11 before Justice Patrick Otieno.
