Kakamega: There was an uneasy calm in Kakamega town as residents went on with their businesses amidst a limited number of people accessing the Central Business District (CBD), fearing being caught in the Saba Saba protests.
According to Kenya News Agency, while many businesses opened in the morning hours, they remained on the watch as police thwarted any attempts by the protesters to gather within the CBD. Anti-riot police manned all the strategic routes, particularly along major roads leading to Kisumu, Kitale, Bungoma, and Busia counties and key businesses like supermarkets and banks.
Some protesters could be seen trying to whip up public support but could not manage to gather enough support to mount any major protest. Those who attempted to move into the town were repulsed by anti-riot police officers, forcing them to retreat to the outskirts of the town.
A spot check by KNA established that public transport went on normally as schools and public offices opened as usual, with supermarkets and banks also opening, amidst limited clientele. By the time of going to the press by 2.30 pm, there was no incident reported by the police.
