Mombasa: Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa has announced plans to establish a bullfighting premier league from next year (2026). Speaking at Solyo Grounds, Shinyalu Constituency during the Second Edition of the Governor's Bullfighting Extravaganza, Governor Barasa said the winner of the league will be awarded Sh200,000.
According to Kenya News Agency, the governor stated that the league will bring together top bulls from all 12 sub-counties in Kakamega as part of the county's broader strategy to promote local culture and grow the sports tourism sector. He explained that the initiative will support various economic sectors, including hospitality, transport, and entertainment, while preserving the unique cultural identity of the region.
The governor noted that the league is expected to run on a structured calendar with tournaments held across the county culminating in a championship event. He emphasized that the county government will work closely with bull owners, cultural leaders, and relevant stakeholders to ensure the league is well-organized, safe, and widely promoted.
