Kiambu: In marking October as Cancer Awareness Month, Kiambu County's Department of Health Services organized a free medical check-up and cancer screening exercise at Kamangu, Nachu Ward in Kikuyu Sub County.
According to Kenya News Agency, the event aimed at promoting early detection, prevention, and management of cancer and other common health conditions through integrated services, including cancer screening, HIV testing, family planning, nutrition counseling, and TB screening. The exercise attracted hundreds of residents who turned up to access the free services brought closer to their homes.
The medical camp was led by the Sub County Health Management Team under the coordination of Dr. Agnes Karita, with support from the Community Health Unit and the County Cancer Screening Team. Dr. Karita emphasized the importance of regular health check-ups and early diagnosis as key tools in combating the rising cases of cancer in the community. 'Cancer remains a major health concern, but early detection saves lives. We want our people to take advantage of these free services,' she said.
During the exercise, residents underwent screening for cervical, breast, and prostate cancers, as well as counseling sessions on preventive healthcare and lifestyle management. Health experts encouraged community members to embrace healthy living practices such as eating balanced diets, exercising regularly, and avoiding tobacco and excessive alcohol consumption. They also highlighted the importance of family planning and regular HIV and TB testing as part of maintaining overall health.
The camp also created a platform for health education, where participants received information on how to identify early warning signs of cancer and the importance of seeking timely medical attention. Nutritionists guided residents on proper dietary habits that can help boost immunity and lower the risk of chronic diseases.
Local residents expressed gratitude for the initiative, noting that such outreach programs make it easier for people in rural areas to access vital health services. 'I am thankful for this medical camp because I managed to get screened for breast cancer without paying a cent,' said Jane Muthoni, one of the beneficiaries.
The Department of Health Services reaffirmed its commitment to continue organizing similar medical outreaches across all sub-counties, ensuring every resident benefits from quality healthcare. By taking services to the community level, Kiambu County is advancing its goal of creating a healthier, cancer-aware population that prioritizes early detection and prevention.
