Post: Kiambu Rolls Out Solar-Powered Streetlights in Witeithie

Kiambu: Last week, Kiambu County Governor Paul Kimani Wamatangi launched the ‘Angaza Kiambu Programme’ in Witeithie Ward, Juja Sub-County. The initiative aims to provide sustainable lighting solutions for the people of Kiambu while reducing the high electricity costs that have burdened residents.

According to Kenya News Agency, during the event, Governor Wamatangi oversaw the installation of 60 solar-powered streetlights. These lights, which will automatically turn on at 6:30 PM and off at dawn, do not require electricity, offering a cost-effective alternative for the county. ‘The funds previously spent on electricity will now be redirected to initiatives that will drive the growth and development of Kiambu,’ Wamatangi stated.

The Governor urged residents to protect the streetlights and hold accountable those who vandalise public property. He also highlighted the specific concerns of Witeithie residents, who have been living in fear due to frequent hyena attacks. Wamatangi expressed his commitment to addressing these safety issues by prioritising the installation of additional streetlights in the area. ‘I hope the people of Witeithie will support me in prioritising your MCA, Mwiberi Ngugi, for more streetlights, as you are the ones most affected by the lighting challenges in Kiambu,’ the governor added.

In the past, there have been multiple incidents where residents, including schoolchildren, were attacked by hyenas, causing widespread fear and insecurity. Ngugi, the area MCA, expressed his gratitude to the governor for launching the programme in Witeithie and acknowledged the other development initiatives supported by the governor, such as the construction of drainage systems and schools.

The installation of streetlights in Witeithie Ward will significantly enhance safety and security. They will deter criminal activities and help residents feel more secure when walking at night. The improved visibility will also reduce the risk of accidents for both pedestrians and drivers. Moreover, streetlights will encourage social interactions and community engagement, as people will feel more comfortable gathering outdoors after dark. This programme is expected to contribute to a more vibrant and secure neighbourhood, fostering community pride and improving the overall well-being of residents.
