Kiambu: Over 2,000 Community Health Promoters (CHPs) across Kiambu County are undergoing intensive training on the Basic Module. This move is aimed at transforming access and delivery of primary healthcare at the grassroots level.
According to Kenya News Agency, the training is spearheaded by the County Government of Kiambu in partnership with Amref Health Africa in Kenya, Amref International University, and the MasterCard Foundation. It follows a successful Health Entrepreneurship Training that equipped participants with skills in financial management, governance, marketing, and risk mitigation.
The current 10-day training program aims to create a robust community health workforce empowered to offer essential services such as maternal and child healthcare, nutrition counselling, sanitation awareness, and early disease detection. The trained CHPs will serve as the first line of defense in communities, linking households to essential health services and strengthening the continuity of care at the grassroots.
"Over 2,000 Community Health Promoters will be trained, including 60 Supervisors and Extension Workers. The Department of Trade and MSMEs will serve as business coaches, equipping health workers with medical knowledge and entrepreneurial skills," said the Kiambu County Director of Public Health and Sanitation, Teresiah Kariuki.
The Basic Module Training is structured to build both theoretical and practical competencies, enabling CHPs to identify, manage, and refer cases effectively within the health system. It also introduces digital tools for household data collection and reporting, ensuring that community health efforts are data-driven and responsive.
With 2,038 CHPs undergoing training, the county is set to witness a ripple effect of empowered households, stronger health systems, and improved outcomes in primary healthcare. The programme aligns with national efforts to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and underscores the role of partnerships in driving sustainable healthcare solutions.
As the training continues, Kiambu County remains committed to nurturing a new generation of community health leaders equipped to meet today's health challenges and safeguard the well-being of its citizens from the village to the county level.
