Kikuyu: Nachu Technical and Vocational College has opened applications for fully sponsored short technical courses under the Kikuyu National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF), targeting youth empowerment through practical skills development across the constituency.
According to Kenya News Agency, the comprehensive training programme aims to impart and equip trainees with necessary practical technical skills to access new employment opportunities and foster entrepreneurship among young people in Kikuyu constituency. The course offerings include catering, plumbing, electrical installation, painting, tiling, welding, masonry, caregiver services, barista training, cosmetology, leather works, and other technical disciplines designed to meet current market demands.
Applications for the programme have been opened across five wards including Nachu Ward, Karai Ward, Sigona Ward, Kikuyu Ward, and Kinoo Ward, ensuring comprehensive coverage of the constituency's youth population. The training will commence on Monday, September 8, 2025, with all courses running simultaneously during a three-month period, providing intensive skills development designed for both local and international job markets.
Magdalene Mwachofi, Principal of Nachu Technical and Vocational College, stated that the partnership with Kikuyu NG-CDF demonstrates commitment to addressing youth unemployment through practical skills training. 'These courses are designed using the standard TVET curriculum framework, ensuring our graduates receive internationally recognized skills. The government has equipped us with modern equipment including welding machines from basic to advanced models, electrical training apparatus, and all necessary tools for quality training delivery,' she said.
The NG-CDF will fully cover all training costs, making the program accessible to participating youth and removing financial barriers that often prevent access to quality technical education. Alice Njoki, a 22-year-old youth from Kikuyu Ward who plans to enroll in the cosmetology course, expressed excitement about the free training opportunity. 'This programme gives us hope because many of us cannot afford technical training fees. Learning cosmetology skills will help me start my own beauty salon and become self-employed,' she said.
The programme will culminate with a graduation ceremony scheduled for December 2025, which will be presided over by Kikuyu Member of Parliament Kimani Ichungwa, demonstrating support for youth skills development initiatives. The hands-on approach ensures trainees are job-ready upon completion, with skills that could be immediately applied in starting their own businesses or securing employment in various technical sectors.
