Post: Kilifi Youth Embrace New Kazi Mtaani Initiative

Kilifi: Youths from across Kilifi North Sub-County in Kilifi County turned out in large numbers at the Kilifi Township Chief's office to confirm their selection in the latest phase of the Kazi Mtaani program.

According to Kenya News Agency, the national initiative dubbed 'Climate Works Initiative,' which aims to economically empower young people through temporary public works in sanitation and infrastructure works employment, continues to attract significant interest nationwide.

The shortlisting and verification process, overseen by national government administration officials, was organised ward by ward, covering areas such as Sokoni, Kibarani, and Mnarani. Each ward had a designated quota of positions, with transparency and fairness at the heart of the selection process.

Felix Obuya, one of the shortlisted candidates, shared his enthusiasm during the exercise. 'After receiving the advertisement from the government, I decided to apply. I was excited to see my name shortlisted yesterday. Today, I've come to confirm if I'll be considered fit for the job. I'm hopeful I will get the opportunity to work under the Kazi Mtaani program,' he said.

Another applicant, Richard Mwaringa, also expressed his gratitude hoping to earn a daily wage that will enable him to cater for his needs and those of his family. 'I found out I had been shortlisted, so I came to confirm. You give your ID and the number from the list, and your name is recorded. I've been waiting for an opportunity like this for a long time. I'm hopeful and grateful,' he said.

Beyond job placements, many youths voiced the need for broader empowerment opportunities. Emmanuel Charo, from the Jikwamue Youth Initiative, called for the expansion of such programs so as to provide sustainable employment opportunities to the youth. 'We hope that Kazi Mtaani will go beyond casual labour. Let it include training in entrepreneurship, ICT, and agribusiness so we can start our projects and employ others in future,' he opined.

Kazi Mtaani has previously been lauded for providing meaningful work during tough economic times, with participants helping improve sanitation, maintain public infrastructure, and beautify community spaces. For many, the program has provided not just a wage, but a sense of dignity and purpose.

As the verification process continues, hundreds of young people in Kilifi County remain hopeful for final confirmation, eager to contribute to community development and build a brighter future.
