Nairobi: The Kitui County Government has taken a pivotal step in transforming its agricultural services by issuing motorbikes to agricultural extension officers. This initiative aims to bolster the accessibility and effectiveness of agricultural services for its farmers, marking a significant stride in the county's agricultural development.
According to Kenya News Agency, Area Governor Dr. Julius Malombe distributed 21 motorbikes to the officers during a ceremony in Kitui town. This initiative is designed to enhance agricultural extension and advisory services, ensuring that farmers gain timely access to modern farming technologies and best practices. Dr. Malombe underscored the county's dedication to advancing the agricultural sector, which is crucial for improving food security and the livelihoods of the predominantly agriculture-dependent residents.
Dr. Malombe noted that the motorbike distribution is part of a collaboration with the National Agricultural Value Chain Development Project (NAVCDP). This project aims to boost production, enhance market participation, and promote value addition among smallholder farmers. With the addition of these 21 motorbikes, the total count allocated across the 40 wards has reached 78, facilitating the movement of 98 agricultural extension officers.
Governor Malombe emphasized the transformative potential of these motorcycles, stating that they are more than mere transportation means; they are essential tools for reaching farming communities, providing training, and addressing agricultural challenges efficiently. To ensure the effective use of these motorcycles, officers underwent comprehensive training on road safety, maintenance, and operational compliance, facilitated by Toyota Kenya.
The officers were also equipped with riding gear and toolkits for minor repairs, and the motorcycles are insured under a group policy registered with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA). Dr. Malombe added that the Ministry of Agriculture will conduct annual refresher training sessions to ensure adherence to road safety regulations.
Additionally, the county has implemented robust monitoring and evaluation measures, including fault reporting, fuel log verification, and quarterly fuel allocations. Governor Malombe reiterated that this initiative is a deliberate investment in agricultural productivity, service delivery, and farmer empowerment. He urged stakeholders, including extension officers and farmers, to collaborate to ensure the program's success.
