Meru: The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) Meru Chapter has condemned the massive destruction and looting of property witnessed during the recent protests staged in the County and the country at large. Through their Chapter Chairman Mr. Michael Ngunjiri, LSK emphasized that while the right to protest is enshrined in the Kenyan Constitution, such actions must always be conducted peacefully and within the confines of the law.
According to Kenya News Agency, Mr. Ngunjiri stated, 'Our Constitution allows peaceful demonstrations and the people have the right to do so. However, it should not be conducted in a way affecting other Kenyans in any way.' He further remarked that the infiltration of legitimate demonstrations by criminal elements is unacceptable and must be condemned in the strongest terms.
Mr. Ngunjiri expressed his concerns over the unlawful acts that not only undermine the spirit of lawful protest but have also, regrettably, contributed to the tragic loss of lives as law enforcement responded to escalating tensions. He urged all citizens to uphold the rule of law and called on the relevant authorities to distinguish between peaceful protesters and those engaging in criminal acts, ensuring accountability without infringing on civil liberties.
Among the properties destroyed during the protests in Meru were Magunas Supermarket, which was burnt down, Selenite Supermarket, and 711 Lounge, among others.
