Mombasa: Traders at Lukolis market center in Teso South Sub County have expressed their joy over the planned construction of a modern market at the center by the National government. The government, through the state department of Housing and Urban Development, is expected to construct an economic stimulus package (ESP) market at a cost of approximately Sh50 million.
According to Kenya News Agency, the traders, led by Tophista Omuse, have faced challenges in their current environment as they conduct their business exposed to the elements. Omuse highlighted the adverse effects of the open-air market, noting that many traders lack shade, leading to the destruction of goods by the sun and health issues from prolonged exposure.
Omuse further explained that the rainy season exacerbates their challenges, as many traders do not have stalls and sell goods on the ground, which becomes difficult in wet conditions. Dust is another issue, affecting the cleanliness of goods and posing health risks to customers.
The new market is expected to provide more space, allowing more traders to operate in the market. Omuse expressed confidence that the expanded market would accommodate all traders, addressing the current space limitations.
Everline Okola, another trader, emphasized the benefits of the new market for her vegetable business, citing the lack of storage facilities that often results in losses. She called on elected leaders to ensure the project’s completion and quality.
John Ekombe pointed out that despite being a significant revenue generator for the county, the market has remained undeveloped. He sees the project as an opportunity to improve business operations and revenue collection.
Amukura West MCA Bonface Erute praised the project, noting its potential to enhance the living standards of traders and boost trade activities. He acknowledged the cooperation between national and county governments and expressed hope that such initiatives would continue to benefit residents.
The Lukolis market project is part of a series of modern market constructions in Busia County, including the recently launched Mungatsi and Aroma markets, each costing Sh50 million, as well as the Bumala market, launched by President William Ruto at Sh250 million, and the Sh50 million Korinda market.
