Masalani: The Municipality of Masalani this week held a series of activities aimed at enhancing service delivery, improving infrastructure, and fostering intergovernmental collaboration.
According to Kenya News Agency, Masalani Municipality Chief Executive Officer Yussuf Mohamed Towane stated that the programme, which included unblocking the drainage system and town cleaning, was supported by stakeholders including youths, government departments, and local communities. Towane shared these insights with KNA following a quarterly board meeting, which convened key leadership in the municipality to assess ongoing projects and strategise on the implementation of development initiatives.
Mr. Towane mentioned that the meeting placed a strong emphasis on accountability, good governance, and aligning municipal efforts with county and national priorities. During the town cleaning exercise, a major town-wide initiative was launched to improve sanitation and public hygiene. This effort involved coordinated actions by municipal staff, local youth groups, and community volunteers to clean streets, public spaces, and waste collection points, thereby promoting community ownership and environmental responsibility.
The CEO highlighted enhanced maintenance of drainage systems to address persistent flooding and water stagnation issues. An intensive operation was undertaken to unblock drainage systems across Masalani, essential for preparing for potential rains, ensuring proper water flow, and reducing the risk of waterborne diseases. This work contributes to the Municipality's broader resilience and disaster preparedness.
Stakeholder engagement forums were also organised to strengthen partnerships and foster collaboration between different levels of government, development partners, civil society, and the private sector. These meetings provided a platform to discuss shared challenges, align development priorities, and encourage inclusive decision-making.
Significant progress was reported in the operationalisation of Masalani Municipal Market, a flagship project poised to boost the local economy by providing a modern, organised space for traders and consumers. Once fully operational, the market is expected to enhance revenue generation for the Municipality and offer improved business opportunities for locals.
Mr. Towane remarked that the productivity of the Municipality of Masalani is driven by focused leadership, well-coordinated action, and active community participation. The Municipality continues to deliver on its mandate, making tangible improvements in the lives of its residents. These achievements are a testament to the hard work and commitment of the entire municipal team, partners, and stakeholders.
Meanwhile, Member for County Assembly (MCA) for Masalani ward Yunis Abdi and Masalani watchdog Chairman Mr. Abdullahi Abdi urged the CEO and board members to allocate market stalls to over 130 traders, including vegetable vendors, butchery owners, milk vendors, and mirra kiosk operators, to improve the Municipality's economy and collect revenue for the market's improvement and maintenance.
The Masalani watchdog Chairman also appealed to the board to address the mathenge weed issue, which has overtaken the town, damaging tarmac roads and newly built houses.
