Post: Mbooni Boys High School Closed Indefinitely After Dormitory Fires

Mbooni: Mbooni Boys High School in Mbooni West Sub-county has been closed indefinitely after property of unknown value was destroyed when two dormitories were torched allegedly by students in two consecutive days this week. In the first incident that occurred on Tuesday at 11:30 pm, a dormitory housing 180 students was set ablaze. The students were forced to sleep in the cold as they watched their belongings go up in flames.

According to Kenya News Agency, the second incident took place on Thursday at around 5:00 am when another dormitory was set on fire, displacing 200 more students. No injuries were reported, but the damage was significant, leaving the affected students with nothing but the clothes they were wearing. Benjamin Mauko, Mbooni West Sub-county Director of Education, confirmed the incidents, urging students to seek alternative ways of solving emerging issues.

“In the Tuesday night incident, 180 students were affected, and today 160 students are particularly distressed as they lost everything in the blaze. They were left with nothing but what they were wearing,” Mauko explained in a phone interview with Kenya News Agency on Thursday morning. He emphasized that burning dormitories is not the solution and urged students to address issues constructively rather than resorting to destructive measures.

Mauko declined to speculate on the motives behind the attacks, but he assured that investigations are underway, and authorities are working to identify those responsible. He added that over 260 students now have nowhere to sleep, hence the school will remain closed indefinitely.
