Nairobi: The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has decried unfavorable working conditions for journalists in counties: The Council has expressed concern over the poor working conditions faced by journalists working in counties, hindering their ability to effectively inform the public.
According to Kenya News Agency, MCK CEO David Omwoyo said that the closure of bureau offices has forced journalists to work from unsuitable and unsafe locations such as hotels, bars, and court corridors. Omwoyo divulged that during a recent visit to the regions, the Council observed that several journalists are pooling resources to rent small offices, which further strains their already limited resources and income.
“Without proper workspaces, journalists face significant challenges in creating and disseminating credible content to the public,” said Omwoyo. The CEO said to address these pressing issues, the council is working towards establishing additional media hubs at the counties to provide journalists with conducive environmen
ts to carry out their work.
“These hubs will serve as spaces for collaboration, networking and content creation,” he said, adding that this will also enable journalists to share ideas, refine stories and produce quality content that can be monetized. He called on governments and likeminded organizations to support the establishment of these common working spaces.
“The Council acknowledges the critical role of journalists in informing society and promoting democracy,” said Omwoyo, adding that these partnerships will ensure journalists have the facilities they need to deliver accurate and timely information to the public. He further said that the Council remains committed to supporting journalists and strengthening the media’s capacity to serve the nation effectively.
