Post: Migori Family Seeks Justice After Son Dies in Police Custody

Migori: A family at the Isebania border town of Migori County is desperately crying for justice following the death of their son, while under police custody.According to Kenya News Agency, the deceased's mother Ms. Mary Wambui, reported that the late Allan Kamau was arrested on Thursday, 28th September 2025, and taken to Kumumuamu police station in Kuria West sub-county. Kamau had been apprehended after his aunt accused him of trespassing and cutting down trees on her farm.Wambui narrated how the victim's aunt primarily sought compensation for the alleged destruction, but because she could not immediately raise the money, her son was detained for more days. 'My son pleaded with his aunt and apologized. But all she wanted was payment for the trees my son had cut. Unfortunately, I had no money, and my son remained in police custody, where he reportedly died on Friday last week,' she explained. That material day, Wambui allegedly received a phone call from an officer at Kumumuamu police station, who identi fied himself as just a corporal and even heard her son's voice in the background pleading for her to save him. Wambui alleges that the same corporal called again around 4 o'clock, demanding a Sh15,000 ransom for Kamau's release, threatening that things 'would get worse' if she did not comply. 'On the same day, I received a call from the same corporal demanding from me Sh15,000 or else I will regret,' she stated.Prior to his death, the deceased was reportedly denied a chance to speak to his friends. The family was later informed by the police that Kamau had committed suicide inside the police cell. The grieving family is now demanding answers and accountability for the circumstances that led to their son's death. They have expressed deep frustration and suspicion because they have not been allowed to view the body, and there is no official report from the police regarding the incident. The family is now appealing to relevant authorities to launch an immediate and thorough investigation into the matter, citi ng a cover-up regarding the alleged extortion attempt and the true cause of Allan Kamau's death.Meanwhile, a postmortem conducted on the body Thursday revealed that the victim succumbed to asphyxiation (lack of air in the lungs), presumably due to strangulation. The exercise was conducted by a pathologist Dr. Leah Obosy, witnessed by close family members of the deceased, as well as two human rights activists Khalid Husein and Collins Osiri.
