Misori: Water transportation challenges between Misori in Siaya and Mbita in Homabay County are set to improve following the procurement of a sh. 2 million fibre speedboat by local stakeholders.
According to Kenya News Agency, the launch of the speedboat at Misori Beach was officiated by Maurice Owino, vice chairman of the Misori Beach stakeholders. Owino highlighted that the introduction of the speedboat is expected to rejuvenate the Misori-Mbita route, which has remained unused despite its significant potential. This development is seen as a critical step in addressing the transport issues faced by traders and commuters from Misori, who currently have to travel 15 km to Lwanda Kotieno to access ferry services, a journey that is both costly and hinders economic growth at Misori Beach.
Presently, travelers and traders looking to cross Lake Victoria to Homabay County rely on ferry services from Lwanda Kotieno or water bus services from Asembo Bay, both located far from Misori. Attempts to extend existing ferry services to include Misori were halted after demonstrations by traders and public service vehicle operators at Lwanda Kotieno, who feared losing business.
Owino revealed that the speedboat is just the beginning of efforts to improve water transport in the region. He mentioned that requests have been made to the government to consider adding ferry services on the Misori-Mbita route to further enhance transportation and trade.
George Ochieng Rai, chairman of the Misori Beach Management Unit, stated that the new fibre speedboat will significantly increase the frequency of trips along the route. The existing wooden boat can only manage one trip per day, making it less appealing for commuters and businesses. Ochieng emphasized that the modern speedboat, which employs advanced technology, offers a safe, reliable, and affordable transport solution for those crossing Lake Victoria.
He added that reviving the Misori-Mbita route would not only enhance tourism and commerce between the two counties but also create job opportunities along the beaches. Ochieng urged stakeholders in the water transport sector to avoid conflicts and focus on developing the sector for mutual benefit.
Local community members, including businesswoman Joy Akelo, PSV operator Aiphonce Odanga, and bodaboda rider Elly Ouko, expressed their appreciation for the speedboat launch. They anticipate that increased customer traffic on the route will positively impact their businesses.
