Nairobi: The Ministry of Health, through its Division of Intervention for Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), in collaboration with Medtronic LABS and with the support of the World Diabetes Foundation (WDF), has taken a significant step in enhancing digital healthcare in West Pokot County by distributing 33 digital tablets to various health facilities.
According to Kenya News Agency, the initiative aims to improve data management for diabetes and hypertension care, reflecting a broader push towards digital healthcare solutions. Vincent Amusavi, the Programme Lead at Medtronic LABS, highlighted that these digital tools will enable healthcare workers to efficiently capture and manage patient data, facilitating more informed decision-making at both the facility and county levels.
Amusavi revealed that the tablets will be primarily used to document and track cases of diabetes and hypertension, which are escalating health concerns in the region. Medtronic LABS is currently supporting digitization efforts for NCD interventions in 35 counties across Kenya.
The programme, funded by the World Diabetes Foundation and implemented in collaboration with six partners, including the Ministry of Health, is dedicated to strengthening digital health systems to improve patient outcomes. Amusavi emphasized the importance of this initiative by stating, "We visited West Pokot to distribute these tablets to support the digital capture of patients related to diabetes and hypertension. This data will be crucial for decision-making at the county level."
In addition, John Lotodo, the West Pokot County NCD Coordinator, confirmed the receipt of 33 tablets, which will be allocated to nine health facilities in Kipkomo and West Pokot sub-counties. Lotodo stated that the aim is to enhance data management systems, which will ultimately inform healthcare planning and resource allocation for diabetes and hypertension services.
The digital health initiative is a major advancement in addressing non-communicable diseases in West Pokot and across Kenya, employing data-driven strategies to shape policy and improve patient care.
