Mombasa: A section of ODM delegates in Mombasa has endorsed Victor Abayo for the party's Branch Secretary position ahead of the county delegates' election slated for Monday, August 25, by the National Elections Coordinating Committee (NECC).
According to Kenya News Agency, only eligible ODM delegates will participate in the polls, with the party publishing the full delegates' list on its website to ensure a transparent and peaceful process. The endorsement came from the Luo community, led by Coast Luo Council of Elders Chairman James Obara Kings, who persuaded contender John Gichana to withdraw in Abayo's favour. 'In the interest of ODM, I have decided to step down for Abayo and pledge to support him in strengthening the party,' Gichana declared, drawing applause from delegates.
Abayo, who enjoys the backing of ODM Deputy Party Leader and Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir, faces his main rival Geoffrey Busaka, the long-serving Branch Secretary allied with former Deputy Party Leader Hassan Joho. Speaking during the endorsement at Tom Mboya Hall, Abayo promised to unify members and embark on a membership recruitment drive ahead of the 2027 general election. 'I will work with Governor Nassir to strengthen ODM in Mombasa and address concerns raised by members,' Abayo said.
However, the branch remains divided, with Busaka's camp accusing rivals of plotting to weaken and fragment the party. Two weeks ago, Abayo controversially declared himself the bona fide Branch Secretary, sparking protests from Busaka's supporters. Governor Nassir has sought to calm tensions, describing the wrangles as 'friendly fire' and assuring members that he respects their democratic choice. 'As Deputy Party Leader, my role is to facilitate a fair and peaceful process. The members will decide their leaders,' he said.
The outcome of Monday's election is expected to set the tone for ODM's grassroots mobilisation in Mombasa as the party positions itself for the 2027 general election.
