Post: Mombasa Youth Express Hope as NYOTA Programme Verification Kicks Off

Mombasa: Hundreds of young people in Mombasa County took part in the nationwide physical verification exercise for the National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) Programme, expressing optimism that the initiative would create more opportunities for self-employment and business growth. The exercise, conducted at all constituency headquarters across the country, was led in Mombasa by the Principal Secretary for Transport, Mr. Mohamed Daghar.

According to Kenya News Agency, the verification targeted shortlisted applicants under the government’s youth empowerment programme. At the Ronald Ngala grounds in Mvita and the ASK grounds in Mkomani, Nyali Constituency, enthusiastic youth turned up for the verification process, voicing their expectations and appreciation for the initiative. In Nyali, young entrepreneurs said the project had come at the right time, noting that many youths in the area engaged in small-scale businesses, such as food vending, fashion, and beauty services, but often faced challenges due to a lack of capital.

‘I expect that once the verification process is completed, the government will fulfil its promise and release the funds to help us earn a living,’ said Alphan Alphan, a youth from Ziwa la Ng’ombe ward in Nyali Sub-County. He urged fellow youth to invest the funds wisely and venture into business to curb unemployment. Khadija Khamis, who runs a juice parlour in Nyali, said she hoped the programme would empower more women to become financially independent. ‘To my fellow women, when you get the money, don’t waste it. Start a business that will uplift you,’ she advised.

Another resident, Peter Lewa, said the project offers hope to young people who have business ideas but lacked capital. ‘We are hopeful that the NYOTA project will not only provide funds but also equip us with the skills to sustain our businesses and create jobs for others,’ he said. At the Ronald Ngala grounds in Mvita, Abdulkafur Ali from Majengo said the initiative was a lifeline for many unemployed youths. ‘This is a great initiative from the government. It will help many of us who come from humble backgrounds to grow or even start businesses,’ he said.

Alice Akinyi, a fashion designer from Old Town, said she was hopeful of being selected, adding that she would use the grant to expand her business. ‘The government’s support will go a long way in addressing youth unemployment,’ she said. The NYOTA Programme is a five-year World Bank-funded initiative aimed at tackling youth unemployment by equipping young Kenyans with skills and resources for self-reliance. It targets youth aged between 18 and 29 years, and up to 35 years for persons with disabilities.

Beneficiaries will receive vocational training, certification of informal skills, mentorship, and start-up grants of up to Sh50,000 to establish or expand businesses. Implemented across all 47 counties, the project also promotes savings and access to formal financial services.
