Post: MP Urges Government to Operationalize New Administrative Units in Nyakach

Nyakach: Nyakach Member of Parliament Aduma Owuor has called on the government to expedite the operationalisation of the newly established administrative units in the region to enhance the decentralization of security and government services.

According to Kenya News Agency, Owuor emphasized the urgent need to make the newly-formed administrative units functional to address insecurity, particularly in Nyakach area, Kisumu County where cases of livestock theft is prevalent. The government, through a gazette notice issued on November 22, 2024, established the Upper Nyakach Division, Bar Location, and three Sub-locations – Ogoro, Buru and Onyuongo in Nyakach Sub-County. The move aims to boost service delivery and improve access to government services at the grassroots level.

The newly created units are run by National Government Administration officers (NGAOs), with Assistant County Commissioners (ACCs) heading Divisions, while Chiefs and their assistants manage locations and sub-locations respectively. “I am pleased to inform the general public that we now have six divisional administrative units making Nyakach Sub-county. We are working closely with the Ministry of Interior and National Administration to ensure these units are up and running,” assured the legislator.

With the addition of Upper Nyakach, the sub-county now comprises six divisions namely South West, Central, West, Lower, North, and Upper Nyakach. Additionally, in Kisumu West Sub-county, Kogony Location, Upper Kogony and Lower Kogony Sub-locations were formed. Muhoroni Sub-County saw the creation of Ombeyi Division, along with Pawteng and Omuga Sub-Locations. Meanwhile, Seme Sub-County gained West Seme Division, Kanyadwera and Ngere Locations, as well as Kahera, Rata, and Central Kadinga Sub-Locations.

The Ministry of Interior and National Administration gazetted the establishment of a total of 578 administrative units countrywide, including 27 sub-counties, 59 divisions, 170 locations, and 322 sub-locations. The expansion has underscored the need to strengthen national administration structures by investing in modern infrastructure, equipment, and personnel to enhance service delivery at all levels.
