Post: Murang’a Gears Up for Youth-Centred Climate Initiative

Murang'a: Murang'a County is ready to launch the Climate Work Programme, a government initiative targeting youth unemployment while promoting environmental sustainability and climate resilience. The programme is part of the broader Climate Resilience Service Programme (CRSP) and will be implemented by the State Departments of Roads and Housing.

According to Kenya News Agency, on Sunday, the County Implementation Committee, led by County Commissioner Joshua Nkanatha, reviewed and confirmed that all the mandatory requirements had been met ahead of the rollout. Commissioner Nkanatha emphasised the importance of following the government-issued checklist to the letter, stressing the need for transparency and accountability in the selection process.

The Commissioner highlighted key eligibility criteria for beneficiaries, noting that they must be Kenyan citizens with a valid national identity card (ID) and should be aged between 18 to 35 years, with age exceptions allowed for vulnerable women and persons with disabilities. They also must have at least a primary school education and must own a Safaricom mobile line registered under their own ID and be registered for mobile money services. They also must not be enrolled in any other government cash transfer programme.

Nkanatha directed all Deputy County Commissioners in charge of recruitment to ensure full compliance with these and any other requirements in their respective sub-counties. He also personally reviewed the beneficiary lists to ensure that the 50/50 gender balance requirement was upheld across all sub-counties.

Murang'a County has been allocated 1,442 workers and 49 supervisors for the programme. The workers will earn Sh500, while supervisors will receive Sh580 per day once the programme commences.
