Murang’a MP Advocates for Political Tolerance Among Leaders

Murang’a: Murang’a Woman Representative Betty Maina has called upon Murang’a residents to be tolerant of leaders from the region who have taken different political positions, saying it was their right to do so. The Member of Parliament (MP), who was speaking at Mugeka in Gaturi ward, Kiharu constituency, criticized leaders from the region who are hostile towards each other for being in different political camps, emphasizing that they should instead focus on delivering their mandates.

According to Kenya News Agency, Maina urged for tolerance among leaders and the public when aligning politically, stating that both government and opposition members can serve the community in various capacities. She highlighted that it is common for leaders from the same region to have opposing views, as is the case in many regions across the country. She remarked, “As a region we cannot put all our eggs in one basket, it is good to have some of our people elsewhere.”

Maina reaffirmed that leaders have the right to make political decisions based on personal plans and knowledge, urging them to deliver services, as the public will judge them based on actions rather than political alliances. She stated, “A political decision should be personal and what really concerns the public is development and service delivery, that is what the people will not forget.”

Expressing her support for President William Ruto’s government for the remainder of the term, Maina noted that this would ensure the region’s fair share of national development. She encouraged welcoming all leaders to prevent the region from being left behind, adding, “As we respect the decisions of those who have decided to have a different political stance, let those of us in government stay in government if it benefits the people.”

Maina also urged leaders to utilize the present time effectively and fulfill their promises instead of waiting for 2027. During the National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF) Inua Mama Mashinani event, she distributed several cheques to various women groups across Gaturi Ward. The beneficiaries included Gataigu Women’s Group, Kangai by Hope Women’s Group, Muga Disabled Self-help Group, and Munyu Women Group.

The NGAAF funds, which are non-refundable, are allocated to registered women’s groups with at least 100 members each. Area Member of County Assembly, Gathee Wa Njeri, encouraged the women groups to utilize the funds for economic empowerment, which is their intended purpose.

Nominated MP and former Murang’a women representative Sabina Chege, who was also present, called for unity among leaders from Murang’a county, emphasizing the importance of working together for impactful development. She stated, “Let us all unite and set aside our selfish interests so that we can deliver development to the people,” noting that leaders will individually seek votes from residents at the appropriate time.
