Murang'a: Lands Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome has urged Murang'a residents to embrace and support government-sponsored programmes and projects for accelerated and sustainable development in the region. Wahome listed some of the programmes including the Social Health Authority (SHA), the Affordable Housing Project, and increased investment in education and training, saying they are intended to improve their living standards and for Kenya's socio-economic growth.
According to Kenya News Agency, speaking while inspecting the ongoing construction of the Ngararia Market in Gatanga Sub-County, the CS noted that the government is prioritizing projects that directly impact the lives of ordinary Kenyans positively. She emphasized that healthcare remains a deeply personal matter, and citizens should take the initiative to register with SHA to avoid last-minute rushes when health problems arise.
The CS also defended the Affordable Housing Programme, saying it is designed not only to address the housing deficit in the country but also to create employment opportunities for thousands of young people. She explained that the initiative is part of the government's broader agenda to stimulate economic growth through job creation.
Turning to education, Wahome highlighted the government's heavy investment in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions. She said equipping TVETs with modern facilities and expanding enrollment will prepare young Kenyans with practical skills and open up opportunities in the labor market.
The CS described the construction of Ngararia Market as part of wider efforts to uplift local economies by providing traders with decent and well-equipped facilities. Once complete, the market is expected to serve about 300,000 traders, offering a modern space that will improve the hygiene of the trading environment and boost incomes for the traders.
