Narok: A major crackdown on illicit alcohol and narcotics in Narok North and Narok West sub-counties has led to the destruction of thousands of litres of illegal brew and seizure of narcotics during a two-day multi-agency operation.
According to Kenya News Agency, the operation was spearheaded by the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) and targeted well-known hotspots in Topoti/Emorogi and Naikara markets; areas long associated with rampant trade in illicit brews.
The crackdown, led by NACADA Head of Enforcement, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Nicholas Kosgey, was carried out in collaboration with officers from the National Government Administration Officers (NGAO) and the National Police Service (NPS).
In Topoti/Emorogi, enforcement teams raided multiple households suspected to be brewing dens destroying over 5,000 litres of Kangara while recovering five kilograms of bhang. No arrests were made as suspects fled upon detecting the approaching officers.
At Naikara Market, the team conducted compliance checks on alcohol outlets and destroyed 60 litres of Busaa, another outlawed local brew. Intelligence reports from the area indicated the presence of counterfeit products which are suspected to have been smuggled from Tanzania.
The authorities hailed the operation terming it as a strong warning to those involved in the illicit alcohol and drug trade. 'The public has been supportive and is willing to assist in future operations,' said SSP Kosgey. 'This is just the beginning. More crackdowns will follow.'
Residents expressed relief and support for the operation, noting that illicit brews have contributed to a rise in crime, health complications, and youth delinquency in the region. Authorities are calling for a broader crackdown involving additional agencies such as the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), the Anti-Counterfeit Authority (ACA), and public health departments to stem the flow of illegal and dangerous substances into the community.
The operation is part of NACADA's ongoing efforts to curb drug and alcohol abuse across the country, especially in high-risk regions like Narok. Officials have vowed to maintain momentum and ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice. 'Those engaging in this illegal trade should know that their days are numbered,' warned Kosgey.
