Busia: The National Authority for the Campaign against Drug Abuse (NACADA) has conducted a sensitization campaign targeting Boda boda operators in Busia County to raise awareness about the negative effects of drug and substance abuse. The event, held in Busia town, gathered over 300 riders from across the county.
According to Kenya News Agency, Busia County NACADA Coordinator Zeka Wekesa highlighted that many boda boda operators fall victim to alcohol and drug abuse due to their exposure. He urged the riders to avoid being used for transporting drugs and illicit brews. Wekesa noted that drug use among operators contributes to increased road accidents and encouraged them to adopt positive parenting to protect children from drug abuse.
Busia Municipality Assistant County Commissioner Calvin Monare advised the riders to steer clear of any form of addiction that could negatively impact their lives. Monare emphasized the prevalence of drug addiction in the county and warned against gambling, which is detrimental to families.
Busia County Deputy Chairperson of boda boda riders, Charles Barasa, called on operators to adhere to NACADA's guidance to combat the issue. Barasa stressed the importance of avoiding alcohol and drugs for the wellbeing of riders and road users, as it would help reduce accidents.
William Wanyama, Teso South Sub County boda boda riders' secretary, acknowledged the sector's struggle with drug abuse, resulting in more accidents. He committed to implementing NACADA's advice to promote sobriety among operators.
