Post: Nakuru’s potato farmers set to reap better yields

Potato farmers in Nakuru County are set to benefit from increased yields and reduced losses following the introduction of Nemix- C, a biological control solution, designed to combat soil-borne pests and diseases naturally.The County Executive Committee Member for Agriculture Leornard Bor said the initiative dubbed Danida Market Development Project (DMDP) is set to be implemented by Nakuru County in collaboration with CARE Kenya, under the CASCADE (Catalysing Strengthened Policy Action for Healthy Diets) program.He stated that the introduction of Nemix- C, will significantly reduce the over-reliance on chemical pesticides, consequently promoting healthier soil and crop conditions.Bor said to enhance farmers' access to the Nemix -C solution, demonstrations will be organized in Kuresoi South and Molo Sub-Counties, which are the major producers of Irish potatoes.He observed that apart from maize, potatoes are the next important crop that contributes a great deal to food security in the country. Adding tha t, the Nakuru County Government Integrated Development Plan (CIDP) 2018-2022 identifies Irish potatoes as one of the main cash crops produced in the county. The county hosts major certified seed producing companies such as ADC in Molo and Agrico East African Company.Additionally, he said the demand for potatoes keeps on increasing due to urbanization because they are easy to cook and affordable. This is especially so in fast food establishments, where the middle class can afford a potato meal of chips for sh80-100.Also, the officer said apart from cooking chips, potatoes are used in the culinary of alcoholic beverages and potato stems and peelings are used by animal feed manufactures to create a nutritious blend of affordable animal feeds. He advised farmers not to throw away waste since it can be decomposed to produce biogas.While speaking today during a media briefing at his office Bor said other organizations such KEPHIS and KALRO are also expected to offer their expertise on the implementation of th e program.The project will be implemented through Cereal Growers Association (CGA) and will not only improve the productivity of potato farming but also ensure long term environmental sustainability.Source: Kenya News Agency
