Nairobi: The Nandi Deaf Women's Volleyball team has written history after clinching victory at the national trials in Nairobi, earning the honour of representing Kenya at the 2025 Summer Deaflympics in Tokyo, Japan.
According to Kenya News Agency, the thrilling contest, held at the University of Nairobi under the theme 'Chasing Dreams,' drew eight teams from across the country. But it was Nandi's grit, precision, and exceptional teamwork that propelled them to the top, reaffirming the county's status as the cradle of champions.
Leaders led by Governor Stephen Sang hailed the win as a moment of pride for both Nandi and the nation. 'You have flown the flag of Nandi and Kenya high. As you head to Tokyo, know that the whole nation stands firmly behind you,' Governor Sang said, pledging full county support for the team's preparations.
In Kapsabet, residents echoed the excitement, 'These young women have shown us that disability is not inability. They have lifted Nandi's name and inspired many families. Tokyo will know that Nandi produces champions,' said Ruth Cherop, a local resident.
Team captain Mary Chepkemboi described the triumph as a dream realized: 'We have trained hard, sacrificed a lot, and today we celebrate not just for ourselves but for the deaf community across Kenya. We are ready for Tokyo,' she said.
Chepkemboi credited the squad's discipline, resilience, and unity for the victory. She noted that the team, founded in 2018 on open grounds in Kapsabet, has steadily grown into a powerhouse despite resource challenges. Training at the Kipchoge Keino Stadium, the squad has relied heavily on determination and community support.
With the Tokyo Deaflympics fast approaching, the team now sets its eyes on medals. 'We want to prove to the world that Kenyan deaf athletes can shine just like our runners,' Chepkemboi declared.
From humble courts in Nandi to the world stage in Tokyo, the Deaf Queens carry not just a ball but the dreams of a county, a nation, and the deaf community worldwide. The 25th Summer Deaflympics will take place in Tokyo from November 15 to November 26, 2025. The 12-day global sporting event will bring together thousands of athletes from across the world in a celebration of talent, inclusivity, and resilience.
