Over 90% of both National and County government offices in Narok County have been connected to the government Wi-Fi, through the Digital Superhighway project.
Narok County Information, Communication, and Technology Authority (ICTA) in Charge Mr. Ronoline Cheruyiot said 23 government offices were covered in the first face of the last mile connectivity.
‘In Narok Central Sub County, 13 sites were connected, in Narok South, eight sites, while in Narok East Sub, two government sites were connected,’ said Cheruyiot.
He underscored that another 46 sites in the county are in the process of being connected in the second phase, of the last mile connectivity, and the activity is expected to be completed in the next few months.
‘In the second last mile phase, two sites are being connected in Narok Central, six in Narok East and Narok South, nine in Narok West, ten in Trans Mara East, and another 13 cites in Trans Mara West,’ he said.
At the same time, the officer said the government is doing the rehabilitation of
Maai Mahiu-Narok fibre backbone as the old one is degraded.
‘The old line has not been stable. It is degraded because of harsh weather conditions like floods that make the line not dependable. However, we are in the process of rehabilitating it, and when completed, internet connectivity will be strong in all sites,’ he said.
Among the sites that will be connected in the second phase are government offices, schools, markets, stadiums, hospitals, police stations, and Technical Voluntary Education Training (TVET) centres.
‘The members of the public who visit these sites should enjoy the free government Wi-Fi,’ he said.
Some members of the public who visit government offices have confirmed the use of free Wi-Fi and lauded the Kenya Kwanza government for keeping the promise of providing free Wi-Fi.
William Marima, a journalist working with Nosim FM, confirmed that when he visited the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP) in Narok County, he used the free Wi-Fi, which he described as strong and r
eliable.
