Limuru: Limuru town in Kiambu County will soon have enhanced safety and emergency response as the newly constructed Limuru Municipality Fire Station nears operational status. Located strategically within the municipality, the fire station project signifies the county's commitment to strengthening disaster preparedness and public safety.
According to Kenya News Agency, the facility, constructed at a cost of Sh27 million under a Public-Private Community Partnership Model (PCPM), features a modern design with engine bays, staff dormitories, offices, and equipment storage units. Eighty percent (Sh21.6 million) of the budget was directed toward infrastructure, while 20 percent (Sh5.4 million) catered for firefighting tools, rescue equipment, and protective gear.
Chief Officer of the Service Delivery Unit Julie Waweru said that the station would benefit from the deployment of one of the four newly acquired fire engines purchased by the Kiambu County Government, with each engine having a 10,000-litre capacity and fitted with advanced features such as floodlights and hydraulic ladders. 'The project reflects our county's commitment to safety, dignity, and timely service delivery to every corner of Kiambu,' she said.
Previously, Limuru relied on a single 4,500-litre fire engine, which served both Limuru and Lari sub-counties with only 10 personnel. Mary Njeri, a trader at Limuru market, welcomed the development, noting the vulnerability they have faced due to past delays in fire response. 'This station gives us peace of mind. In the past, delayed response has cost us property and livelihoods,' she said.
The project, nearing final installation and staffing, is expected to drastically reduce emergency response times and ensure rapid action in the event of fires, road accidents, or other disasters. The public will be able to reach firefighters through the designated emergency numbers (0771 755 440 and 0672 222 085).
