According to Kenya News Agency, these teachings are considered the best approach to make the youth budget-conscious, disciplined, and self-reliant in managing their resources and eventually becoming self-employed. Children are the cornerstone of any nation's future, and their financial independence can significantly influence a country's economic trajectory.
In light of the high unemployment rates and economic challenges, investing in the financial education of young minds becomes crucial. In Ntimaru, Kuria East Sub County, Migori County, the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA)-Kenya, a faith-based NGO, has taken the lead in championing socio-economic empowerment for children.
ADRA-Kenya's holistic program encourages Kuria school-going children to engage in poultry and horticultural farming, generating income to support their education and household needs. This global organization works with impoverished communities to foster just and positive change through empowering partnerships and responsible actions.
For the past three years, ADRA has been nurturing and economically empowering Kuria's primary school children to combat negative practices like Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), teenage pregnancies, and early marriage. Merja Heikkila, a Senior Project Coordinator from ADRA Finland, highlights the importance of empowering children early to foster a self-reliant society.
The 'Empower Her' project focuses on empowering children through agricultural initiatives, shaping their educational and economic prospects. Since its inception in 2022, the project has empowered 1,600 pupils and over 100 women groups through various agricultural ventures.
Heikkila explains that the program identifies grassroots needs, addressing challenges like FGM, school dropout, and teenage pregnancy. The project has inspired significant economic change within the community, benefiting both children and their families.
Ntimaru Sub County Social Development Officer Steven Marwa notes that the 'Empower Her' program has significantly reduced school dropout rates from 20% to 8% since 2022. The project also aims to identify and resolve unseen challenges by the end of the year.
Martynas Baltiejus, ADRA Finland Country Director, emphasizes community cooperation in addressing Kuria's challenges while preserving positive traditions and cultures. He asserts that involving children in change can lead to substantial community improvement.
