Post: NuPEA Partners with Masinde Muliro University to Train Nuclear Energy Workforce

Nairobi: The Nuclear Power and Energy Agency (NuPEA) has initiated discussions with Masinde Muliro University to establish a training program aimed at developing a skilled nuclear energy workforce. This initiative is part of the preparations for the construction of a nuclear power plant slated to commence in 2027, which will necessitate more than 10,000 workers across various professions, including plumbers, masons, and engineers.

According to Kenya News Agency, NuPEA Chairman, Eng. Prof. Lawrence Gumbe, together with CEO Justus Wabuyabo, led a delegation from the agency to meet with Prof. Solomon Shibairo, the Vice Chancellor of Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology. The meeting, held on Wednesday, was a precursor to the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the two institutions. Prof. Gumbe emphasized that the collaboration would not only address workforce training but also facilitate research in nuclear applications across diverse fields such as agriculture, medicine, engineering, and weather forecasting.

Prof. Gumbe reiterated NuPEA's legal mandate in Kenya to implement the government's nuclear power program and conduct research in energy and petroleum sectors. CEO Justus Wabuyabo highlighted that the partnership would create opportunities for Kenyans to receive training in nuclear energy technology. He assured that the nuclear energy program would adhere to stringent safety standards set by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Wabuyabo also mentioned that NuPEA has already signed an MOU with Pwani University and plans to engage Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University, Kisumu National Polytechnic, and other tertiary institutions to develop the workforce required for the nuclear power plant. He stated that the agency is engaging the public through forums to raise awareness and promote understanding of the nuclear power plant's safety and benefits.

Prof. Solomon Shibairo, the Vice-Chancellor of Masinde Muliro University, expressed the university's readiness to begin training students in nuclear technology. The university plans to launch a diploma program in January 2026, initially enrolling 25 students, with plans to expand to a degree program in the future. Prof. Shibairo explained that nuclear technology is prevalent in everyday life, citing examples such as x-ray and MRI services, illustrating the technology's broad applications.
