Nyamira: Nyamira County Commissioner Erastus Mbui has urged political aspirants cleared by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to conduct peaceful and orderly campaigns ahead of upcoming by-elections in the county. Speaking during Mashujaa Day celebrations at Ikonge Primary and Junior Secondary School (JSS) grounds on Monday, Mbui emphasized the importance of maintaining decorum and respect among candidates as they campaign in three different constituencies in the county.
According to Kenya News Agency, Mbui stressed the need for candidates to avoid defamatory remarks about their competitors, warning that such actions could have legal repercussions. He reminded the aspirants that ultimately, it is the voters who will choose their leaders. "We expect peaceful campaigns that show respect for all opponents because, at the end of the day, it is the voters who will decide who becomes their leader. Desist from making defamatory remarks about your competitors as such actions have legal consequences," Mbui stated.
The County Commissioner also highlighted the importance of considering the ongoing national examinations during the campaign period. He urged candidates to ensure their activities do not disrupt learning institutions. "You must remember that final exams for primary, Junior Secondary School, and secondary school learners will be ongoing. Avoid playing loud music near exam centres or disrupting students in any way. Stick to the IEBC campaign regulations and timelines to avoid unnecessary conflict," he advised.
In addition, Mbui noted the presence of ongoing national government development projects in Nyamira County, including affordable housing units, modern markets, and tertiary institution hostels. He encouraged local youths, skilled professionals, and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) traders to capitalize on the job and business opportunities these projects present. "We have several construction works underway. I urge our young people and local traders to seize the employment and supply opportunities at these sites to earn a living and improve their livelihoods," he said.
As the festive season approaches, Mbui called upon residents to exercise moderation, ensure personal safety, and maintain peace and order. During the celebrations, speakers paid tribute to the late Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga, remembering him as a visionary and selfless leader whose legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
