Nyamira: Nyamira County residents have been urged to support and show compassion for children and families raising children with cerebral palsy for them to grow normally and thrive in the community.
According to Kenya News Agency, this appeal was made by Nyamira County Coordinator for the National Council for Persons with Disability (NCPWD), Fred Obuya, while presiding over the commemoration of World Cerebral Palsy Day in Nyamira. He expressed regret that children with cerebral palsy, along with their caregivers and families, continue to face discrimination, exclusion, and stigmatization both at home and within communities.
Mr. Obuya emphasized the unique challenges faced by children with cerebral palsy, noting the multifaceted nature of their disability. He stressed the importance of compassionate and ever-present caregivers, who provide selfless love and care. Parents and caregivers were urged to seek early medical intervention upon noticing early signs of cerebral palsy, such as delayed developmental milestones, lack of coordination, and difficulties with muscle and body movement.
The NCPWD county coordinator outlined various interventions available through the council for people or children with cerebral palsy. He called on professionals and organizations to partner with them and bring in inclusive ideas and strategies to support these children within the community. The council, in collaboration with county referral hospitals, offers occupational, physical, and speech therapy interventions, as well as dietary advice to ensure children maintain their developmental milestones.
Mr. Obuya also highlighted the importance of medical interventions, including assessments by specialists, medication for muscle tension and seizures, provision of diapers for hygiene, and wheelchairs for mobility. He urged parents and caregivers to remain committed and compassionate, embracing their God-given responsibility, and recognizing the unique talents of each child.
World Cerebral Palsy Day, celebrated every 6th of October, aims to create awareness and advocate for support. This year's theme, "Unique and United," encourages everyone to celebrate the unique strengths of persons with cerebral palsy.
