Kapsabet: Over one hundred senior government officers, non-state actors, and members of the Nandi business community participated in a training session focused on the importance of adhering to the Data Protection Act 2019. Officers from the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC) emphasized the need for participants, especially those from the National and County Governments of Nandi, to familiarize themselves with the act to ensure the protection of individuals' data in their daily operations.
According to Kenya News Agency, Dr. Manuel Makopi, the lead training officer from ODPC, expressed concern that many individuals and organizations have faced legal challenges due to a lack of understanding of data protection compliance. He highlighted the ODPC's role in regulating the processing of personal data and ensuring the rights of data subjects are upheld, underscoring the necessity for all affected parties to understand and comply with these regulations.
Dr. Makopi urged organizations and institutions acting as data controllers or processors to register with the ODPC, noting that non-registered entities should complete electronic registration to receive a certificate valid for two years. Vincent Musyoki, another ODPC trainer, stressed the importance of adhering to data protection principles amidst the current era of uncontrolled online messaging technology. He advised individuals and organizations to seek consent before using someone's data to avoid legal repercussions and potential damage to institutional reputations.
Musyoki also warned against the misuse of personal data for commercial or criminal purposes, advocating for the protection of innocent Kenyans' rights. He cited incidents where minors were used in marketing without guardian consent, resulting in negative outcomes. The training, held at the Eliud Kipchoge Sports Complex Conference Hall in Kapsabet town, was attended by various stakeholders, including heads of departments from both County and National Governments, religious leaders, and boda boda representatives.
Nandi Central Deputy County Commissioner Alfet Jillo, representing Nandi County Commissioner Caroline Nzwili, expressed gratitude to ODPC for organizing the training. Jillo highlighted the session's role in promoting integrity and confidentiality among officers handling local data, ultimately improving service delivery. She noted that the training equipped participants with knowledge on proper data handling and avenues for lodging complaints in case of issues.
