Post: Presidential election 2024: Popular Current announces support for Kais Saied

Tunis: The Popular Current announced its support for Kais Saied in the forthcoming presidential election set for October 6 ''out of its commitment to its values, principles and Tunisia's interests, which go beyond any personal, partisan or sectoral considerations."The party stated in a press release issued on Thursday at the end of a press conference held at its headquarters in Tunis, that the historic opportunity to anchor the national liberation project remains intact and continues with President Kais Saied.'There is therefore no need to take the risk of compromising it by associating with those who wish to overthrow him,' it considered. The party also justified its support for candidate Kais Saied by the 'progress' made in the investigation into the assassinations of Chokri Belaid and Mohamed Brahmi (a former leader of the Popular Current) as well as in all the accountability issues. On the 11th anniversary of Brahmi's assassination, the party reiterated its commitment to uncovering the truth about t he assassination, its circumstances and the perpetrators.'Despite the shortcomings and errors observed after July 25, we are convinced that Kais Saied may be the right man for the job in the future, provided that he unveils his work programme for the coming years,' said party Secretary General Zouhaier Hamdi in a statement to the media on the sidelines of the press conference. He added that the Popular Current's support for Saied is also based on a 'fundamental reason,' that 'we share the same values and principles, such as national sovereignty, the social state, the public sector and the position on the Arab-Zionist conflict.'The defence team for martyr Mohamed Brahmi will go to the headquarters of the judicial counter-terrorism division on Friday to sign the decision to close the investigations into the case of former judge Bechir Akremi, he said.Akremi is accused of concealing terrorists and participating in terrorist crimes and political assassinations, he explained, adding that "the investigation into the complaint against Akremi was closed on July 22.'The investigations revealed that the charges against him were serious and that the judiciary, represented by him, was involved in the assassination case, covering up the facts and allowing impunity.Source: Agence Tunis Afrique Presse
