Post: Presidential Taskforce Engages Turkana Stakeholders on Human Origins Museum Plans

Turkana: The Presidential Taskforce on the proposed Human Origins Museum and Science Park conducted its fourth stakeholder consultation in Turkana, focusing on architectural designs, business opportunities, and environmental conservation.

According to Kenya News Agency, the meeting included professionals from various sectors such as environmental conservation, women, youth and PWD-led groups, engineering, culture and heritage, tourism and hospitality, and trade and investment.

The recent consultation differed from previous engagements that predominantly involved government officials and the general public. Taskforce leader Richard Barno emphasized the importance of inclusive participation during the planning and design stages, aiming to establish the Lake Turkana Basin as a global center for paleoanthropological research and cultural tourism. Barno stated that designing a world-class museum and science park requires input from all community segments.

Participants stressed the need for formal land acquisition procedures, upgrading local social infrastructure, integrating smart building techniques, and employing clean, renewable energy technologies. Francis Emanikor from the National Environment Management Authority highlighted potential ecological disruptions but expressed hope for proactive mitigation measures. He advised that a comprehensive Environmental Impact Assessment be conducted before construction begins.

Priscilla Ekeno, speaking for special groups, advocated for universal design principles in the architectural plans to ensure accessibility for all, emphasizing the importance of accommodating persons with disabilities, women, and children. Ekeno also urged for prioritizing local women in tourism-linked value chains and strengthening youth capacities in tour guiding, cultural interpretation, museum curation, and technical operations.

In response, Barno assured stakeholders that their input would shape the project's implementation plan, reiterating the taskforce's commitment to transparency, continuous public engagement, and collaborative planning. The Human Origins Museum and Science Park is part of a national initiative to showcase Kenya's heritage and scientific assets globally, while creating educational and economic opportunities for local communities. The taskforce plans to engage more stakeholders and administer data collection tools to assess the project's feasibility in the coming days.
