Turkana: The Presidential Taskforce on the Development of Kenya Home of Human Origins Museum and Science Park has commenced discussions that will culminate in the development of a museum and science park in Kalokol, Turkana Central Sub-county. The project is a collaboration between the county government, Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), National Museum of Kenya (NMK), and other national government entities. The team was hosted by Deputy Governor Dr. John Erus in Lodwar. The taskforce was established last year by President Dr. William Ruto. The 17-day exercise will include conducting a preliminary reconnaissance survey, assessing the condition of the roads, and evaluating the status of water sources in the areas.
According to Kenya News Agency, Deputy Governor Dr. Erus emphasized the need to create opportunities from available resources in the region and develop infrastructure that will benefit the local community. He highlighted the importance of community engagement, stating that public participation is key to the success of the initiative. Dr. Erus also mentioned that water is the county's top agenda and ensuring that water systems function properly will support livelihoods and help reduce poverty.
The taskforce team leader, Major Josphat Miguna of the KDF, reassured their commitment to the project until its completion. NMK scientist Samuel Muteti mentioned that the survey assessment would determine how to link various prehistoric sites to the museum and science park. Other speakers, including Acting County Secretary Joseph Nyanga, Chief Officer for Urban Areas Management Peter Lomorukai, and Director for Survey Joseph Egiron, reiterated that public participation is critical as the community needed to understand the benefits of the project, which includes facilitating their land registration process.
The Deputy Governor urged the taskforce to commence the project as soon as the land was available. He noted that the project's connectivity with Marsabit and prehistoric sites would offer a greater experience to tourists visiting the region. Representatives from the national and county government departments of Lands, Water, and Roads were also present.
