Post: Prof. Atwoli Takes Over the Presidency of WHS

Berlin: Prof Lukoye Atwoli, Dean of the Aga Khan University Medical College, East Africa, was formally handed the 2026 International Presidency of the World Health Regional Meeting during this year's summit in Berlin. This milestone marks the first time in history that the World Health Summit International Presidency transitions to Africa, underscoring the continent's growing influence, innovation, and leadership in global health.

According to Kenya News Agency, the symbolic passing of the WHS baton from NIMS University, New Delhi, India, to Aga Khan University, Nairobi, Kenya, represents not only a geographic shift but also a deepening commitment to inclusive, globally informed health solutions. In his acceptance remarks, Prof Atwoli reaffirmed AKU's collective commitment to championing transformative health systems and evidence-based solutions, addressing the continent's most pressing health challenges.

"As the WHS Regional Meeting baton moves from New Delhi to Nairobi, we at the Aga Khan University are honoured to convene leaders, innovators, and partners, to address Africa's health priorities," said Prof Atwoli. "This transition symbolizes global recognition of Africa's role in shaping a healthier, more equitable future for all," he added.

The World Health Summit Regional Meeting 2026 will be hosted by the Aga Khan University in Nairobi, Kenya, from April 27-29, 2026, at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre, under the theme, 'Reimagining Africa's Health Systems: Innovation, Integration, and Interdependence.' The WHS Regional Meeting 2026 is expected to convene over 2,000 global health leaders, policymakers, innovators, and researchers from across Africa and the world to explore African-led solutions for advancing health equity, strengthening health systems, and addressing critical issues such as the rising burden of chronic and non-communicable diseases, the changing patterns of infectious diseases, sustainable health financing, digital health, AI, and technological innovation.

The handover ceremony celebrated the enduring spirit of collaboration, equity, and shared vision among global health institutions and partners.
