Kisumu: The late Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga was opposed to wastage and the financial burden placed on bereaved families during funerals, according to former Alego-Usonga Member of Parliament Sammy Weya. Weya highlighted this aspect of Raila's character by recalling several instances where Raila intervened to ensure that a significant portion of funds raised for funerals was allocated to the bereaved families.
According to Kenya News Agency, Weya recounted an example involving the funeral of the former chairman of the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Kassim Owango. During this occasion, the fundraising committee managed to raise Sh10 million. Raila instructed that Sh7 million be immediately given to the bereaved family, with the remainder to be used for covering the funeral expenses.
Weya noted that Raila consistently criticized the excessive spending associated with funerals and the financial strain it placed on grieving families. Raila's approach was to minimize these burdens, advocating for quick interments and a focus on simplicity, which he exemplified through his own directives for his funeral.
Weya emphasized the importance of respecting Raila's wishes and encouraged the Luo community to follow his example of simplicity in funeral arrangements. He lauded Raila as a humble leader who dedicated time to visit and support ordinary citizens.
