Post: Raila Odinga Remembered as a Champion of Affirmative Action

Bondo: The Maendeleo ya Wanawake Organisation (MYWO) on Friday commemorated the late former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga, recognizing him as a pivotal figure in the promotion of affirmative action. The organization called upon those who have benefited from his efforts to continue advancing the vision he had for the nation.

According to Kenya News Agency, during a ceremony at Kang'o ka Jaramogi in Bondo sub-county, MYWO, led by Chairperson Rahab Muiu, highlighted Raila's significant impact on increasing women's representation in leadership roles. Muiu recalled Raila's support for affirmative action initiatives, noting that his involvement in the National Assembly and other forums helped elevate the number of women leaders significantly.

Muiu recounted the efforts leading to the establishment of affirmative action seats in the National Assembly and Senate. She noted that after an initial attempt by former Karachuonyo MP, the late Phoebe Asiyo, to pass such a bill failed in 1997, it was Senator Beth Mugo who reintroduced it in 2000, with Raila Odinga as the motion's seconder. This initiative has resulted in the presence of over 87 women legislators today. Muiu encouraged current women legislators and supporters of affirmative action to further the implementation of the gender rule outlined in the Constitution in honor of the late Raila.

In a separate tribute, Justice, Human Rights and Constitutional Affairs Principal Secretary Judy Pareno praised Raila for his commitment to equality, regardless of tribal affiliations. Pareno, who also paid respects at Raila's grave, credited him with nurturing her political career, including her nomination as the first Maasai woman to the East African Legislative Assembly.

Additionally, Odungi Randa, chairman of the Luo Council of Elders, urged Kenyans to maintain unity and harmony, reflecting Raila's vision for the country. Randa, accompanied by a delegation from Kisumu West, emphasized Raila's legacy of prioritizing national unity over individual interests. Kisumu County Assembly Speaker, Elisha Oraro, echoed this sentiment, calling for adherence to national laws and collective harmony, underscoring Raila's belief that no individual is greater than the country.
