Wote: The Kenya Red Cross Makueni County Coordinator, Solomon Usia, has called upon residents to take precautionary measures, especially when crossing roads, in an effort to avert loss of lives on the roads.
According to Kenya News Agency, Usia specifically warned individuals against crossing roads at corners and reminded pedestrians to observe traffic rules before crossing. He also urged motorists to avoid driving while under the influence of alcohol. "Road safety starts with an individual. When crossing the road, you have to look to the left, then right before you cross. Pedestrians should not cross the road at sharp bends since visibility is low, and drivers should not drive while drunk," Usia emphasized over the weekend during the 60th-anniversary celebration of humanitarian service at Green Park in Wote town.
Usia further cautioned boda boda riders to avoid carrying heavy loads and advised them to carry only one passenger. He also highlighted the dangers of carrying children in front of the rider, as it can lead to accidents. "Overloading, especially with children seated in front of the rider, poses not just safety risks but health implications," he pointed out.
Additionally, Usia reminded passengers in vehicles to always wear safety belts and warned them against hanging their hands outside the windows. During the celebrations, students present were educated on how to handle incidents like fires caused by gas, among other safety measures.
