Post: Red Cross Pact Strengthens Homa Bay Disaster Response

Homa bay: The Kenya Red Cross Society has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Homa Bay County Government to enhance collaboration in disaster management, public health, water and sanitation, and youth empowerment.

According to Kenya News Agency, the agreement marks an important step towards strengthening coordination after months of flood emergency response. During the signing ceremony and groundbreaking of the new Kenya Red Cross Society headquarters in Homa Bay, Secretary General Dr. Ahmed Idriss emphasized the significance of the partnership.

‘We are here to take stock of our relationship with the County Government of Homa Bay following a very difficult period of responding to floods,’ said Idriss. ‘This MoU outlines clear areas of collaboration, providing mechanisms for coordination, joint resource mobilisation, and improved service delivery in key sectors including primary healthcare, disaster rescue, and sanitation.’

Idriss highlighted that the partnership aims to empower youth through the construction of a new complex that will include a youth centre, a warehouse, and Red Cross offices. ‘This space will encourage creativity, innovation and engagement among young people, ensuring they are at the heart of our humanitarian mission,’ he added.

Homa Bay Deputy Governor Joseph Magwanga welcomed the partnership, expressing optimism that the presence of the Kenya Red Cross in the county would help tackle long-standing challenges. ‘With the Red Cross on the ground, we are confident that together we can resolve many of the issues affecting our people,’ Magwanga said.

The collaboration is expected to enhance disaster preparedness and response while building long-term resilience in the region.
