Nairobi: Residents from three villages in Kikumbulyu North Ward have called on the County Government of Makueni to allocate funds in the next financial year for the installation of floodlights to enhance security in local markets. The appeal comes as part of broader efforts to improve the safety and functionality of market areas.
According to Kenya News Agency, the residents of Mulangoni, Musingini, and Kanyungu villages, led by businesswoman Cecilia Kioko, emphasized that floodlights would enable them to conduct business during nighttime hours and improve overall security. Ms. Kioko also highlighted the urgent need for the county government to allocate funds for addressing drainage issues and constructing essential facilities such as toilets and sheds, which are currently in poor condition.
"Our markets lack basic facilities like toilets and sheds, making it difficult for us to work in a clean and safe environment free of diseases," stated Ms. Kioko during a public participation engagement forum.
Additionally, Emily Mumbua urged the government to ensure timely provision of seeds and fertilizer, expressing concern that delays have negatively impacted agricultural productivity. "We rely on these seeds and fertilizer to plant, but every year, they come when the rains have already started or even ended, which affects our food production and leaves us struggling to feed our families," Mumbua lamented.
Regarding wildlife issues, Denis Mulandi called on the government to manage wildlife within National Parks to prevent crop destruction. He noted significant losses due to elephants invading farms. "These elephants invade our farms and destroy our crops, leaving us with nothing to harvest. We are scared to move freely because we don't know when they might attack. The government must act and ensure these animals are kept within National Parks," Mulandi said.
The Kikumbulyu Ward Administrator, Alex Makau Nzambu, who led the public participation forum, encouraged residents to voice their concerns, emphasizing the importance of their input in guiding budget allocations and policy decisions. "This engagement allows residents to highlight their most pressing needs, which will inform budget allocations and policy decisions," he stated.
