Post: SDO tackles challenges, pledges development in Manyu

In a bid to address pressing issues and foster development, the Senior Divisional Officer (SDO) for Manyu, Mr. Awounfack Alienou Yves Bertrand, embarked on a two-day tour of Mamfe Subdivision on August 16-17, 2024.Security Concerns DominateA key focus of the visit was the security situation in the Subdivision. The SDO acknowledged the challenges posed by armed groups and condemned recent attacks on security personnel and infrastructure, including the burning of the Mamfe District Hospital. He called on the population to remain vigilant and cooperate with security forces.To bolster security, the SDO announced plans to strengthen collaboration between local authorities, traditional rulers, and the community. He also emphasized the importance of intelligence sharing to preempt attacks.Economic Revival and DevelopmentDespite the security challenges, the SDO expressed optimism about the Subdivision's potential for economic growth. He inspected several ongoing development projects, including the reconstr uction of the Mamfe District Hospital, a new market, and a recreational center.A cornerstone of his development agenda is the provision of affordable housing. The SDO laid the foundation stone for a low-cost housing project, aiming to address the region's housing deficit.Youth Empowerment and EducationRecognizing the importance of youths in the future of Manyu, the SDO highlighted the need for job creation and skills development. He called on young people to engage in productive activities and avoid being lured into crime or extremism.Education was another key focus. The SDO emphasized the importance of schooling and urged parents to send their children to school. He also pledged to support initiatives aimed at improving the quality of education in the Mamfe subdivision.Community EngagementA central theme of the SDO's visit was community engagement. He held town hall meetings where he listened to the concerns of residents and provided updates on government initiatives. The traditional title of 'Iy amba' was conferred upon him as a symbol of his connection with the people.Challenges AheadWhile the SDO's visit offered hope and reassurance to the people of Manyu, the challenges facing the subdivision remain significant. Addressing the root causes of insecurity, stimulating economic growth, and improving the livelihoods of the population will require sustained efforts and collaboration between government, communities, and development partners.Mayor's SpeechMamfe Mayor Robertson Tabenchong Ashu used the opportunity of the SDO's visit to highlight pressing issues affecting the municipality. He emphasized the need for a stable electricity supply, citing frequent power cuts as a major hindrance to development. Additionally, the mayor expressed concern over the growing problems of illicit drug trafficking, youth unemployment, and drug abuse.To address the issue of youth unemployment, the mayor appealed to the government for financial support to create job opportunities within the municipality. He also acknowledged the government's assistance to families affected by the November 2023 terrorist attack in Egbekaw.Mayor Ashu stressed the importance of education, urging parents to enroll their children in school for the upcoming academic year. He emphasized that education is a cornerstone of national development.Finally, the mayor thanked government officials, including Minister Victor Mengot Arrey Nkongho, Senator Nfor Tabe Tando Ndiepso, and Professor Etchu George, for their support.
