Mfangano island: The Senate Committee on Transport, Roads, and Housing has expressed concerns regarding the inadequate infrastructure on Mfangano Island, highlighting its role in hindering economic growth and isolating residents from the mainland.
According to Kenya News Agency, the committee, led by Migori County Senator Eddy Oketch, who chairs the committee, visited the island in response to a 2022 petition by the Mfangano Development Forum. The petition called for the extension of the Homa Bay-Mbita road to Mfangano Island and the establishment of a ferry service to improve connectivity and commerce between the island and the mainland.
The petitioners requested the government to introduce a regular ferry service between Mbita and Mfangano to facilitate movement and enhance trade. During the visit, Senator Oketch emphasized the committee's goal to evaluate the progress since the petition was presented and explore practical solutions to enhance connectivity for the island's residents.
'A regular ferry service would allow island residents to access the mainland easily and conduct business just like those in Likoni, Mombasa,' Oketch stated. He mentioned that while a government-funded ferry could offer affordable services, the petitioners suggested exploring a public-private partnership model to expedite the project.
The senator disclosed that Sh800 million has been allocated by the government for a Lake Victoria ferry project, which aims to operate from Kisumu through Mbita to Muhuru Bay in Migori County. However, he clarified that this initiative does not provide daily transport services for Mfangano residents.
The committee also highlighted the deteriorated condition of the 54-kilometer road encircling Mfangano Island, noting that it is barely motorable and primarily accessible by motorcycles. The senator expressed the committee's intention to advocate for the road's upgrading and tarmacking.
In addition to transportation issues, the committee identified the lack of a modern market as a significant concern. Despite being one of the largest fishing hubs in the region, Mfangano lacks adequate trading infrastructure. The senators stressed that a fully equipped market would bolster the island's fishing economy.
'Mfangano contributes significantly to fish production in Lake Victoria, but its development has lagged behind due to poor connectivity,' Oketch remarked. Kitui Senator Enock Wambua, also part of the committee, acknowledged the urgency of the issues raised by the residents and pledged the Senate's commitment to seeking solutions.
'The issues on Mfangano Island are critical. We will push for what needs to be done,' Wambua asserted.
