Post: Sh620 Million Rural Electrification Project Launched in Nyamira

Nyamira: The Cabinet Secretary for Energy and Petroleum, Opiyo Wandayi, has commissioned rural electrification projects worth Sh620 million in Nyamira County. Wandayi emphasized the delay in rural electrification projects in the county, noting that many households, businesses, and shopping centers remain without electricity, which prompted the prioritization of this initiative.

According to Kenya News Agency, Wandayi highlighted the largely rural population in Nyamira County and their lack of access to the benefits of electricity. He stated that the ministry has developed strategies to supply power to all remote parts of the country, aiming to improve the lives of Kenyans living in rural areas. The ministry has allocated a budget of Sh620 million for Nyamira County to ensure that homes, shopping centers, schools, tea buying centers, and other business premises are connected with electricity through the last mile connectivity project implemented by the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Cooperation (REREC).

Wandayi assured support for farmers, students, and traders in rural areas, acknowledging their significant contributions to the country’s development and economic stability. He stressed the importance of adequately lit public spaces to provide a safe and conducive environment for all citizens.

Legislators Joash Nyamoko, Stephen Mogaka, and Clive Gisairo committed to collaborating with the ministry to ensure the successful completion and functionality of the electricity connectivity project. They expressed optimism that improved lighting would enhance development and basic operations in rural homes, benefiting both the community and students’ academic performance.

Other notable leaders present included Walter Nyambati, Chairman of the Geothermal Development Company; Nyamira County Senator, Okong’o Omogeni; Nominated MP Irene Mayaka; county assembly legislators; and members of the national government security team, including County Commissioner Erastus Mbui.
