Post: State Exploits Leather Industry to Boost Economy

Narok: The state targets shifting from traditional revenue sources to unexploited frontiers in a bid to boost the country’s economy, the Deputy Chief of Staff, Performance and Delivery Management Eliud Owalo has said. Speaking during a tour to the Ewaso Nyiro South Development Authority (ENSDA) leather factory in Narok, Owalo revealed that the government had pumped Sh1.1 billion into the industry that has a capacity to process over 2.4 million metric tonnes of hides and skins annually.

According to Kenya News Agency, Owalo emphasized that leather is one of the new frontiers in the economy, highlighting the availability of raw materials and processing capacity. He stated that if harnessed well, the leather industry could become a significant contributor to the economy, reducing the need for shoe imports in Kenya. Owalo further noted that at optimal capacity utilization, the factory should generate substantial revenue for the economy.

The deputy chief of staff reiterated the ongoing collaboration between national and county governments to ensure maximum utilization of the factory, which has been operational since 2022. Owalo’s visit to Narok County also included inspections of completed and ongoing national government projects and engagements with residents on prioritizing projects.

Narok Governor Patrick Ntutu, who accompanied Owalo, announced that President William Ruto would soon commission the factory as the construction is complete. He highlighted the factory’s importance for Narok County’s pastoralist community, which relies heavily on livestock. Ntutu mentioned that the factory is expected to employ more than 500 young men.

The governor praised the national government’s support and affirmed the county government’s commitment to supporting the factory for maximum utilization. ENSDA Chief Executive Officer Ngala Oloitiptip informed the delegation about the tannery’s expansion, doubling its production capacity to 2.4 million square feet of leather per year. Oloitiptip expressed confidence in the tannery’s ability to sustain itself.

The factory visit was also attended by Narok County Women Representative Rebecca Tonkei, Narok South Member of Parliament Kitilai Ole Ntutu, and Narok North Member of Parliament Agnes Pareiyo.
