Post: State Targets Unregistered Churches to Curb Religious Radicalisation

Nyanza: Regional Commissioner Florence Mworoa has said that the government will not spare any unregistered church entities to curb religious radicalisation. Mworoa, who spoke during a tour of the Melkio St Joseph's Missions of Messiah in Opapo-Rongo, which was recently raided by Rongo police officers, said that a looming crackdown on unregistered churches will not spare anyone.

According to Kenya News Agency, the Rongo-based church with questionable doctrines has been shut down by authorities following the rescue of 57 worshippers who resided within the premises. The recent activities in Rongo-Migori, where two bodies, including that of a GSU officer, were buried in the Melkio St. Joseph's Missions of Messiah Church, point out the need for reinforcement in the crackdown on unregistered church entities.

'We will not tolerate radicalisation in the churches that aims to brainwash our society', said Mworoa. The RC also cautioned government officials who collude with unregistered entities that they are breaking the law, adding that no one will be spared in the crackdown.

Mworoa called upon the members of the public to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities to security agencies to avoid negative vices in society. 'It is very important for everyone, including the security agencies, right from the village elders to play their part and know what is happening in our society to make it a better place to live in', said Mworoa.

The administrator also confirmed that security agencies were still gathering information from the Opapo community, Rongo, to get a better insight into the church's happenings in recent years. Early last week, Rongo Resident Magistrate Susan Mutava directed the 57 followers of the Meiko church to be detained at nine police stations across the county for 30 days to allow completion of investigations.
