Post: State to Construct More Dykes in Trans Nzoia to Mitigate Effects of Floods

Trans Nzoia: The National Government, through the Ministry of Water, Sanitation, and Irrigation, has announced plans to enhance flood control measures in Trans Nzoia County, which include constructing additional dykes along River Sabwani. This initiative aims to reduce the impact of floods in the area.

According to Kenya News Agency, the implementation of these measures will be conducted in collaboration with the National Water Harvest and Storage Authority (NWHSA). Speaking during an inspection tour of the River Sabwani flood control works, Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Water, Sanitation, and Irrigation, Eric Mugaa, highlighted the progress made since the launch of flood mitigation measures in 2017. NWHSA has assisted families living along the river in reclaiming more land for agricultural purposes, which has resulted in increased food productivity. The government has invested close to Sh40 million in these efforts and plans to intensify them further.

CS Mugaa encouraged the youth to utilize the reclaimed land for agribusiness, which he stated would help address food insecurity and unemployment. He emphasized the importance of cooperation among stakeholders for the success of the upcoming construction of 0.25 km dykes. Mugaa also cautioned residents against cultivating along dyke embankments to prevent damage to the infrastructure.

The Cabinet Secretary urged contractors to maintain high standards of work, assuring that payments will only be made after satisfactory completion of projects. He disclosed that the government will allocate Sh15 million in the 2025/26 Financial Year for the preliminary design and construction of the additional 0.25 km dyke.

CS Mugaa also reassured residents of Kwanza and Endebess that the Kiptogot-Kolongolo last mile water connectivity project will ensure adequate water supply to every household once completed.
